The American Royal

The American Royal Association, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and Kansas City's longest running show, has been a Kansas City tradition since 1899. During September, October and November, more than 250,000 people attend the American Royal. The American Royal has attained the position as not only one of the oldest and best-loved traditions in Kansas City, but also one of the largest combined livestock, horse show and rodeos in the nation.

Kaleidoscope

Millions of children from all over our planet have visited Kaleidoscope, where they get to make whatever their mind desires, using melted crayons, polka dots of all sizes, zigs and zags, shooting stars, cardboard, shiny paper, pretty ribbons, and lots of other jazzy junk. Kaleidoscope's imaginative worlds inspire each child's creativity. Children explore exciting environments as they make their own amazing art from Hallmark discard materials.

Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo is located in Swope Park. With more than 200 acres of land, it is the 10th largest zoo in the United States. Founded in 1909, the zoo is divided into five separate areas and is home to more than 1,300 animals. An IMAX Theater, a great location and a variety of educational programs make the Kansas City Zoo a popular destination all year.

Overland Park Arboretum

The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens was founded to keep the city at the forefront of environmental and ecological issues. A leader of environmentally sound community development, the Arboretum is an educational, recreational and cultural resource for the Kansas City region. The Arboretum is located on 300 ecologically diverse acres in southern Johnson County. Eight different ecosystems have been identified on the site, including rare plant species. Hiking trails wind their way through the Arboretum.

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site is the last remaining stagecoach stop on the historic Santa Fe Trail still open to the public. Three original buildings are preserved: The Mahaffie Family Home/Stagecoach Stop, two-story Ice House, and Wood Peg Barn. Other buildings include a large livestock barn, a 20th-century implement barn made from two wooden railroad boxcars, reproduction blacksmith shop and smokehouse, and a maintenance building that houses public restrooms.

Deanna Rose Farmstead

The Farmstead is a 12-acre park. It has farm animals, birds of prey, vegetable and flower gardens, a one-room country schoolhouse, old time fishing pond, horse drawn wagon rides and pony rides. The farmstead first opened in 1978 and was renamed in 1985 to honor Deanna Rose, an Overland Park police officer killed in the line of duty.

Negro League Baseball Museum

The 18th & Vine historic district was the center for black culture and life in Kansas City from the late 1800s-1960s.It is against this backdrop that the NLBM was conceived as a museum to tell the complete story of Negro Leagues Baseball, from the average players to the superstars. It has welcomed several thousand visitors and dignitaries since 1990, including Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, General (Ret.) Colin Powell, Jesse Jackson, Walter Cronkite, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Barry Bonds, and many, many others.

Union Station

This fully restored 1914 landmark is Kansas City's most prominent destination for entertainment and cultural activities. The Station is home to a permanent rail exhibit with vintage rail cars, an interactive science center, a vibrant Theater District featuring giant-screen movies and live theater, fine restaurants, unique shops, spaces for meetings and events and much more. Of course, you can still catch the train at Union Station, once again among Amtrak's busiest stops.

Liberty Memorial WWI Museum

On December 2, 2006, the National World War I Museum opened the window to an extraordinary emotional and intellectual experience. Envisioned by the people of Kansas City, designed by Ralph Appelbaum, and designated by Congress as the nation's official WWI Museum, the new state ofthe art complex at Liberty Memorial uses highly-interactive technology to bring history to life, and to foster timely discussions of ethics, values, decision making and conflict resolution.
